Packhorse Bridge is a lovely winter design, showing this beautiful ancient bridge spanning the river, with deer grazing at the water's edge. The colours are spectacular and really capture the atmosphere of a crisp winter's day. This is actually the 'Essex Bridge' which crosses the River Trent on the edge of Cannock Chase and the Shugborough Estate in Staffordshire. It was built in 1550 by the then Earl of Essex for Queen Elizabeth I so that when she visited the estate she could go hunting in the woodland around the local village. It is now the longest remaining packhorse bridge in England with fourteen of its original forty round span arches left.
